Chuch -vegetarian thai resto in Montreal
My boyfriend and I wanted to go to a fancier place for dinner last night in montreal -at least some place where we could drink wine. We considered going to a Syrian restaurant which Hugo highly recommends and has a vegetarian plate, but we finally opted for probably the only vegetarian restaurant in Montreal where you can bring your own wine, Chuch (at its sister restaurant, Chuchai, nextdoor they...

In praise of Sweet Potatoes →
Last night I made sweet potato fries and a quinoa salad for dinner for my boyfriend Hugo and his sister Marie. Marie asked me whether sweet potatoes were healthier than potatoes. My immediate response was of course, but I did a little internet research to back up what I already thought I knew. While the way you prepare them helps a lot (baked or lighty steamed is better than fried), sweet potatoes...

Back on the Vegan track
Okay now as proof that I am back on the Vegan track, here is a picture of my lunch yesterday: mixed salad of lettuce, red cabbage, grated carrot, tomatoes, red pepper, pine nuts and lime juice with some oil and vinegar and a kamut pita wrap filled with quinoa, lettuce, olives and tempeh with some left over indian spinach sauce. Yum!

Impossible to be a vegetarian in France? →
If you read French you might be interested in reading this. It is a link to an article my friend Marianne, who is an admirably French vegetarian 90% of the time (she eats meat at her parent’s), sent me about being a vegetarian in France. Half of it is about a baby girl who died from being neglected (she was sick and her parents tried to ‘cure’ her with cabbage, apparently), and...

Confessions about Paris
So I gave myself a free pass over the weekend on being a Vegan. I know! I do feel a bit guilty. But I was in Paris for a wedding. Being a Vegan is hard enough (though still totally doable) when you are traveling, let alone when you are in a country where chocolates, pastries and foie gras are part of the daily food intake and nothing is cooked without being drowned in butter. The last time I was...

Vegan Toronto
I didn’t have much time to do any first-hand investigating of Vegan options in Toronto when I was there visiting my family last week. I spent about two full days holed up in North York at my grandma’s in between going up to my Dad’s cottage north of Peterborough, where he spends pretty much every weekend. But because I am quite familiar with Toronto health food spots, I thought I...

Chinese Vegan Spinach Pancake Recipe
You seem to always be able to count on foreign food to have some spectacularly good vegan recipes, and quite often very healthy too. My sister was taught how to make this dish from a friend visiting from northern china who said it was a very popular meal in the spring when all the fresh local spinach came into season. I wouldn’t call this the healthiest meal (because of the white...

In honour of earth day... →
… which was last Sunday, I thought I would reblog this article about whether being Vegan is better for the environment than being vegetarian. I was disappointed not to find conclusive facts, and also to learn that only about 5 % of vegetarians are vegan (are they really so few?!), but I am still pretty sure that being a Vegan has to be much better for the environment than being just a...

Vegan Buckwheat Banana Applesauce Muffins!
… featuring dates and walnuts.  I whipped up these beauties one morning before a run this weekend at my Dad’s cottage when I noticed he had some bananas that were badly in need of attention… aka banana bread time! I had brought a pack of buckwheat pancake mix along with me on my visit, and I noticed some applesauce in the fridge, so I just browsed a few vegan muffin recipes, and...

Vegan in Vancouver
As far as I could tell, Vancouver BC is like the mecca for vegans. This may be due to the fact that my first few days there were spent exclusively doing outings to Commercial Drive from where my twin sister Jaki and friend Julia live at Main St. and King Edward. Just skimming through the vegan restaurant directory put out by Earthsave, Canada showed me that about half of Vancouver’s...

Vegetarian or Vegan?
… I am trying to figure out whether the vegetarian sandwich I bought from air canada’s on board cafe on my flight back from Vancouver was vegan or just vegetarian. When I first ordered the sandwich, I figured because it said Vegetarian and had no cheese, just grilled red peppers and zucchini, it would automatically be Vegan. When I got the sandwich I opened it and saw a white sauce,...

My Vegan Equivalent
… of butter (on toast) is avocado … of parmesan cheese is nutritional yeast … of milk (on granola or cereal) is almond milk … of yogurt (like in the ginger squash soup I made last night) is coconut cream  … of chicken, eggs, and pretty much every meat product, is tofu… What are your Vegan equivalents?

Egg-free Breakfast Scramble
This is the kind of thing I would only really recommend eating if you are a Vegan. That’s mostly because nutritionally, I think this would be on par with scrambled eggs (if you just replaced the tofu). If you think in terms of animal cruelty or the environment, however, it might be a better.  I whipped this up the morning Jaki and I were catching the ferry to Victoria. We almost missed...

Apparently I am not really a Vegan... →
…according to some of the guests on the episode Vegans Take America of the NPR radio show On Point. This is a pretty good run down on Veganism. The debate towards the end is particularly interesting, and exposes some of the controversies of Veganism. I think my personal philosophies really aline with the Vegetablist, Vegetable crusader lady. She is awesome. What do you guys think? Are you...

Two hot books about being a Vegan
Skinny Bitch and The Thrive Diet are two vegan diet slash lifestyle books I have been drawn to time and again. The New York Times bestseller Skinny Bitch sells itself as a no nonsense wait to looking good and losing weight. It was co-written by Rory Freedman, a former modelling agent and Kim Barnouin, a former model.  The Thrive Diet sells its self as a holistic approach to increased energy...
